Which Patients Should You Refer for Oral Appliance Therapy?

Refer if your patient fits any of these profiles:

  • CPAP-intolerant patients — Mask discomfort, leaks, or a device that just sits unused.

  • Mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) — AHI 5–29.9, the strongest candidates for a custom oral appliance. Severe cases who fail CPAP may also qualify.

  • Chronic snorers — Even without a diagnosed sleep breathing disorder.

  • TMJ/TMD pain, jaw clicking, or bruxism — Teeth grinding and jaw dysfunction.

  • Not sure? Refer for a sleep apnea test or TMJ evaluation — no downside for the patient.

Oral Appliance Therapy Referral FAQs

  • What AHI qualifies a patient for oral appliance therapy? Mild (5–14.9) to moderate (15–29.9) OSA are the strongest candidates. Severe OSA (30+) may still qualify if the patient is CPAP-intolerant.

  • Is oral appliance therapy covered by insurance? Yes. It's billed through medical insurance as durable medical equipment (DME), not dental insurance. We handle verification and billing.

  • What should I send with a sleep apnea or TMJ referral? A copy of the sleep study (if available) and relevant clinical notes. No study yet? We can help coordinate one.

  • How fast can a referred patient be seen? — Typically within 1-2 weeks. Please call our office for current availability.
